After the intense summer heat, the rainy season brings much-needed relief—but also potential risks. Here in the Philippines, it often comes with storms, typhoons, and flooding, so it is essential to stay prepared and alert to ensure safety and well-being.
1. Stay Updated
Keep track of weather alerts from trusted sources to act early when heavy rains or typhoons are expected.
2. Make an Emergency Plan
Set a family plan with clear evacuation routes, meeting points, and ways to stay in touch. Make sure everyone knows what to do.
3. Prepare a Go-Bag
Pack essentials like water, ready-to-eat food, medicines, first aid supplies, flashlights, batteries, and important documents.
4. Storm-Proof Your Home
Before the rainy season hits, secure windows, doors, and loose outdoor items. Clear drains and consider storm shutters if needed.
5. Know When and Where to Evacuate
Identify your local evacuation zones and routes. Follow official instructions and prioritize evacuating children, seniors, PWDs, and pregnant women. If possible, never leave your pets behind.
6. Stay Away from Flooded Areas
Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters—just a few inches can be dangerous. Watch out for damaged electrical lines and other hazards.
7. Safeguard Appliances
Unplug electronics and shut off utilities, when advised, to reduce the risk of fire or electric shock during storms.
8. Keep Devices Charged
Charge your phones and have power banks or extra batteries ready in case of outages.
9. Stock Up Wisely
Prepare at least three days’ worth of food, water, and essentials—including items for babies, seniors, and pets.
10. Prioritize Hygiene
Floodwater may carry harmful bacteria. Avoid contact and wash hands properly to prevent illness.
